The best way to find marriage records is through the Bureau of Vital Statistics or the Department of Vital Statistics. Keep in mind that these records are only available from the county where the event occurred. If you had grandparents who married in Kentucky and now live in Utah, you need to contact the department in the county where they were married.
Some states ask that the Department of Public Health handle those records. If you want a copy of a marriage record, you need to check with the probate court. The county clerk usually has divorce records.
Marriage records are important for genealogy research because they show you the names of the couple. Also known as a marriage certificate, it puts the name of the husband first and then the name of the wife. The certificate lists the occupations they had along with their ages. During the early years, many women only appeared as homemakers in those records.
A marriage certificate will also show the date of the marriage, which may differ from the wedding date. Some couples file their marriage certificates before or after their wedding days. You can see who oversaw the wedding and the name of any witnesses who were there.
