The National Archive is the best place to look for World War 2 service records. Though the US only entered WWII after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, soldiers were already in the military before then. There are casualty lists that include the names of all soldiers killed in action.
Missing in Action records list the names of men who went missing during the war as well as when others last saw them. You have the option of looking through each branch of the service, which is helpful if you don’t know which branch your ancestors served. Some resources allow you to search all branches of the military at the same time.
Enlistment records are among the best records available for the loved ones of military men. All you need is the name of your ancestor. Once you enter the name in the database, you will see all of the available records. Their enlistment records will show you when and where they enlisted as well as their date of birth and full name. Other records allow you to see where the person served and when they left the military. You may also find it helpful to look at any medals or honors they received during the war such as a Purple Heart.
